Q&A › Worship in the home

🕌 Worship in the home · #167

My husband is a convert (mualaf) and about to observe his first Ramadan. How can I help him?

Help him experience Ramadan as a mercy, not a frightening endurance test. Explain the most important basics first: the intention, the times of sahur and iftar, what breaks the fast, and the concessions for those who are ill or travelling. Do not overload him with all the voluntary practices at once. Prepare a sahur he likes and make sure he drinks enough. Invite him to the mosque for iftar or Tarawih if he is comfortable, so that he feels the spirit of brotherhood. If his family is not Muslim, help him plan how to attend family gatherings without feeling left out. Celebrate every day he manages to fast. A more experienced convert friend can also be a good guide. See Ramadan as a family.
