🕌 Worship in the home · #143
My husband made a mistake in recitation or forgot a rak'ah while leading us. How should I correct him?
During the prayer, a male follower alerts the imam by saying ‘Subhanallah’, while a female follower claps her hands. That signal is used for mistakes in actions, such as the imam standing up for a fifth rak'ah or missing the sitting for tahiyyat. For a mistake in reciting a verse, a follower may recite the correct verse quietly but loud enough for the imam to hear. After the prayer, do not make the mistake a joke in front of the children. Say it privately: ‘I think that verse goes like this, Abang. Shall we check together?’ An imam who is corrected respectfully will feel calmer about continuing to lead. If you are unsure whether the prayer needs to be repeated, consult an ustaz or the religious office. See congregational prayer guide.
