I have found out that my spouse is not fasting in Ramadan without a permitted reason. How should I respond?
Speak to them privately, gently and honestly, because abandoning the Ramadan fast without a valid excuse is a major sin. Start by asking, not accusing. There may be a reason they are ashamed to share, such as a health problem, work stress or faith that is currently weak. You could say, ‘I've noticed something and I'm worried. Can we talk?’ Do not embarrass them in front of the children or family. Invite them to fast with you the next day, having sahur and iftar together, so they feel supported. Also remind them that missed fasts must be made up (qada). If this keeps happening and comes with other signs, such as abandoning prayer or seeming depressed, get help from a counsellor or a trusted ustaz. See counselling.
