How can we make paying zakat fitrah a lesson for our children?

Take the children with you when you pay and explain why, because real experience leaves a deeper mark than explanation. Before going to the counter or paying online, sit together and count how many family members need to be paid for, including the baby. Explain briefly that zakat fitrah purifies our fast and makes sure struggling families can celebrate Raya too. Let the older children hand over the money or press the payment button themselves. The rate is set by the state religious authority, so check the latest amount with them each year. Afterwards, invite them to give a little charity from their own duit raya (Raya money). See zakat and welfare.
