Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #221

Our two extended families are at odds and we are caught in the middle. How can we reconcile them?

As the meeting point of two families, the two of you are best placed to build bridges, not take sides. Allah calls: “so make peace between your two brothers (who are in dispute)” (Surah al-Hujurat 49:10). Do not pass on one side's unkind words to the other, because that fans the flames. Look for common ground and occasions that bring people together, such as a celebration for a child, to ease the atmosphere. Establish that your home is neutral ground, free of their quarrels. If the dispute is serious, suggest a mediator respected by both sides. Patience and fairness are key; reconciliation rarely happens overnight. See in-laws.
