Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #88

I have just been divorced. What do I need to deal with in the first week?

Prioritise three things: certainty about the talaq status, the children's needs, and money for day-to-day living. Note the date, time and the words pronounced, then go to the Syariah Court or the district religious affairs office for confirmation. Keep copies of your marriage certificate, the children's birth certificates, identity cards and bank statements together in a safe place. Work out your waiting period (iddah) so you know when it ends, and discuss iddah maintenance and child maintenance in writing. Tell one or two family members you trust so you do not carry everything alone. Turbulent emotions this week are normal; get enough sleep and do not make big decisions in a hurry. Use the iddah calculator as a first guide.
