Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #218

Every time we fight, my in-laws step in to take my spouse's side. What should I do?

Arguments between husband and wife should be resolved between the two of them, not turned into a matter for the extended family. The main cause is often information leaking out, so agree with your spouse not to complain about your fights to your respective parents in the heat of the moment. If your in-laws still interfere, your spouse should respectfully tell them that the two of you are working it out yourselves. Listen to their views if they are useful, but decisions about your household remain in your hands. Watch your tone so your in-laws do not feel harshly rebuffed. Resolving conflict privately protects your relationship with both families. See communication & emotions.
