Q&A › Worship in the home

🕌 Worship in the home · #146

My husband wants to pray at the mosque, but I want him to lead us at home. Which is better?

For men, praying in congregation at the mosque is strongly encouraged; the middle way is to combine both. Rather than pitting the mosque against the home, set a fair schedule. For example, the husband goes to the mosque for Subuh and Isyak, and leads the family for Maghrib before dinner. He can take the sons with him to the mosque once they can keep proper manners. Voluntary prayers are best done at home; the Prophet ﷺ said: “Perform some of your prayers at home, and do not make your home like a grave” (Sahih al-Bukhari 432). That way the home stays alive with prayer even when the husband goes to the mosque. Discuss this arrangement together and review it after a month. See congregational prayer guide.
