🕌 Worship in the home · #57
After menstrual bleeding stops, a yellowish or cloudy discharge continues. Is that menstruation?
If yellow or cloudy discharge comes after the woman has become pure (the bleeding has stopped and the sign of purity is clear), it is not counted as menstruation; according to the Shafi'i school, if it comes within her usual period, it is counted as part of the menstruation.
Umm ʿAtiyya r.a. said: we did not regard yellowish and cloudy discharge (after purity) as anything (Sahih al-Bukhari 326). The sign of purity is that cotton inserted comes out clean or white. Ordinary white discharge that is not blood is not menstruation, but it breaks wudu and, on the cautious view, should be cleaned. Women who are confused are advised to note the dates and colour over a few cycles so that their pattern becomes clear. If the discharge smells, itches or changes markedly, see a doctor. See Fiqh of menstruation.
