🕌 Worship in the home · #62
A wife's period begins while she is performing umrah or hajj. What should she do?
She continues every rite except tawaf and prayer, and waits until she is pure to perform tawaf; menstruation does not invalidate ihram.
ʿAisha r.a. began menstruating at Sarif on the way to hajj and wept; the Prophet ﷺ said this is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam, so do everything the pilgrims do except tawaf of the House until you are pure (Sahih al-Bukhari 294). A menstruating woman may make the intention of ihram at the miqat, stand at ʿArafah, stay at Muzdalifah and Mina, throw the pebbles and remember Allah. Problems usually arise when time in Makkah is limited; talk early with the guide and agency, and consider medication to delay menstruation on medical advice before departing. The farewell tawaf is waived for a menstruating woman. Her husband should be patient and adjust the schedule. See the question on medication to delay menstruation.
