🕌 Worship in the home · #56
When performing hajj or umrah together, what is forbidden between husband and wife?
During ihram, intercourse and every form of intimacy with desire are forbidden until the release from ihram (tahallul); intercourse before the first release in hajj invalidates the hajj.
Allah says: whoever undertakes hajj in those months, there is to be no rafath (intercourse and what leads to it), no wrongdoing and no quarrelling during hajj (al-Baqarah 2:197). This prohibition covers kissing and touching with desire. According to the Shafi'i school, after the first release most ihram restrictions are lifted except relations between husband and wife, which become lawful only after the second release. Violations carry a dam (expiation) that varies with the case; consult the hajj guide. The same verse forbids quarrelling — the real test for a tired couple in the crowds of the Holy Land. See the question on marrying in ihram.
