🕌 Worship in the home · #157

My young child asks why Mum is eating during the day in Ramadan while she has her period. How do I answer?

Answer honestly and briefly according to the child's age, without embarrassment. Simply tell a young child, ‘Ibu has an excuse that Allah allows for not fasting. Ibu will make it up on another day.’ This explanation teaches two things: Allah gives concessions, and a postponed obligation must still be fulfilled. For a daughter approaching puberty, it is a good opportunity to begin explaining menstruation gradually. Sons also need to know in general terms so that they respect the condition of their mother and sisters. Many mothers choose to eat out of sight as a courtesy in front of children who are fasting; that is a good choice, not an obligation. See fiqh of menstruation.
