My teenager seems depressed and anxious. How should I help?

Approach a depressed teenager by listening and being present, not by interrogating or lecturing. Spend time together without forcing them to talk, and validate their feelings so that they feel safe sharing. Avoid belittling them with words like ‘that's just a small thing’. Watch for changes in their sleep, appetite, friends and achievement. Limit the pressures you can control and make sure they know your love is unconditional. If the low mood persists or they withdraw completely, take them to see a doctor or the school counsellor. Keep your relationship a safe place for them to come back to. See educating the family.
