Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #382

I am so exhausted caring for a child with special needs that I have neglected myself and my marriage. What should I do?

Looking after yourself is not a luxury, but a condition for being able to keep caring for your child. Caregiver exhaustion is real, and Allah does not burden a soul “beyond what it can bear” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:286); so do not carry everything alone. Divide tasks with your spouse clearly and in turns, and accept help from family or the Social Welfare Department (JKM). Set aside even a little time to rest and for the two of you as a couple, so that the marriage is not worn away by busyness. Join a support group of parents who understand this journey. If you feel prolonged stress or depression, see a doctor or counsellor. See mental health.
