Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #109

I have long planned to perform umrah, but I am now in my iddah after talaq. May I go?

The majority of scholars, including the Syafi'i school, forbid a woman in iddah from travelling for voluntary worship such as umrah, so it is better postponed until the iddah ends. The duty to stay put during the iddah comes before voluntary worship that can still be done later. Contact your umrah agency as soon as possible to ask about changing the date or transferring the booking. Use the iddah period to strengthen your worship at home: night prayer (qiamullail), Qur'an recitation and dhikr. Your intention to go to the Holy Land is still valuable in Allah's sight. If there are special circumstances, such as an obligatory umrah not yet performed or a date that cannot be changed, ask the state mufti's office for an accurate ruling. Read the explanation in iddah and rujuk.
