Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #111

My iddah has ended. What changes legally between me and my ex-husband?

Once the iddah ends, the two of you become complete strangers (ajnabi) to each other, and he can no longer take you back (rujuk) without a new marriage contract. This means the limits of aurat, the prohibition on being alone together and the etiquette of mixing with other men now apply to him as well. Iddah maintenance also stops, but his duty to pay child maintenance continues. Matters concerning the children can carry on courteously, ideally in an open place or with others present. You are also free to accept a proposal and marry someone else if you wish. Make sure the divorce has been registered and that you hold the divorce certificate. If needed, adjust the way you communicate so that it focuses on the children only. Read also mahram.
