💍 Khitbah & engagement · #58
We are afraid of falling into zina during our engagement. Should the wedding date be brought forward?
Yes, if both are able, bringing the marriage forward is the solution the Shariah recommends; a big reception can be held later.
The Prophet ﷺ urged young people who are able to marry, because it lowers the gaze and guards chastity, and those not yet able to fast (Sahih al-Bukhari 5066). Allah also forbids approaching zina (al-Isra' 17:32). Many Malaysian couples choose a simple marriage contract at the religious office or mosque first, then the wedding reception when the money is ready. Discuss the reason honestly with both families. While waiting: reduce meeting alone, avoid private conversations late at night, and keep busy with useful preparation such as the pre-marriage course. See the question on marrying first and celebrating later.
