💍 Khitbah & engagement · #57
My marriage proposals have been turned down again and again. How should I cope, and what should I improve?
A rejected proposal is not a rejection of your worth; marriage partners are decreed by Allah, and every "no" can be a chance to improve yourself and the way you propose.
Allah says: perhaps you dislike something while it is good for you (al-Baqarah 2:216). A woman and her guardian have the right to refuse, and that is better than accepting unwillingly. Helpful self-reflection: are you proposing to someone suitable in faith, age, background and expectations; are your financial and career preparations reasonable; are you proposing through a respected representative? Ask a mediator for honest feedback. Keep improving your faith, character and skills, pray, and perform istikharah. Avoid proposing in haste because of family pressure or age. If the disappointment is very heavy, talk to a counsellor. See the question on finding a spouse late.
