💍 Khitbah & engagement · #60
During the engagement, my future in-laws show signs of disliking me. What should I do?
Stay respectful and patient, give time for getting to know one another, and ask your fiancé(e) to be the bridge; do not quarrel or take the issue public.
Allah tells us to repel evil with good until the one at enmity becomes like a friend (Fussilat 41:34). Common causes: parents worried about losing their child, differences in background, or misunderstandings at the first meeting. Steps: find out their real concerns through your fiancé(e); show commitment and responsibility; visit together with your family, bring gifts and respect their customs. Your fiancé(e) should tell their parents politely that the choice was made maturely. If the rejection is very harsh and persistent, discuss honestly whether the marriage can succeed in that atmosphere, and seek advice from a counsellor or mediator. See In-laws.
