Q&A › Khitbah & engagement

💍 Khitbah & engagement · #62

We crossed the line during our engagement. What should we do now?

Repent sincerely, stop at once, and hasten the marriage contract; do not despair of Allah's mercy.
Allah says: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; Allah forgives all sins (az-Zumar 39:53). Repentance means regret, stopping and resolving never to return. The sin need not be made public; Allah loves the servant who conceals his fault and repents. If a pregnancy results, marriage to that man is valid according to the Shafi'i school, but the child's lineage depends on how long after the contract the birth occurs; ask the religious office about registration. Get a health check if needed. It may also be an offence under the state Syariah criminal enactment. See the question on a birth soon after marriage and the question on marrying a pregnant woman.
