Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #207

My husband is caught between me and his mother, who often clash. How can I ease his situation?

Do not force your husband to choose between you and his mother; help him honour both in their proper places. He is obliged to be dutiful to his mother, and Allah commands: “And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility” (Surah al-Isra' 17:24). At the same time, he is responsible for protecting his household. Avoid telling him to cut ties with his mother or complaining about every little thing. Choose the issues that truly matter, and ask him to raise them with his mother gently, not through a quarrel. Show that you respect his mother so he does not feel squeezed. When your husband sees you making things easier rather than adding to his burden, he is better able to be fair. See in-laws.
