🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #24
Should one give the greeting of salam when entering one's own home, even if only one's spouse and children are there?
Yes, it is recommended (sunat) and strongly encouraged, even in one's own home.
Allah says in Surah an-Nur 24:61 that when you enter houses you should greet one another (that is, the people of the house) with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. Salam is more than a formula; it tells the household that you come with goodwill and it calms the atmosphere after a long day outside. For a couple going through a cold patch, a salam answered kindly is often the first step back to each other. Teach the children to answer the salam so that it becomes the culture of the home. Even when the house is empty, the salam is still recommended. See Daily etiquette.
