How do we celebrate Hari Raya in two homes so that no child feels second best?
Plan Hari Raya early and tell the children the schedule clearly so that no one feels forgotten. Young children measure love through presence, not the number of days. Make sure the father spends meaningful time at both homes during the season, not just dropping in briefly. Set one small tradition that is the same for all the children, for example a Raya photo or a Raya-morning hug from their father. Avoid comparing one home's celebration with the other's in front of them. If a child is disappointed, listen first before comforting. With careful planning, every child feels that Raya belongs to them too. See children in polygyny.
