🕊️ Conflict & resolution · #121

My spouse refuses to talk about feelings and just goes silent. How do I help them open up?

Many people go quiet not because they have no feelings, but because they are not used to expressing them or are afraid of being judged. Pushing usually makes them close up even more; try to make it safe and easy. Choose a relaxed setting without pressure, perhaps while walking or driving, because some people find it easier to talk without eye contact. Ask short, open questions, then allow silence without forcing. Appreciate every small thing they share so they feel safe to continue. Avoid using what they share to attack them later. If they stay completely closed and the relationship suffers, a counsellor can help open the way. See communication & emotions.
