🕌 Worship in the home · #61
May a husband and wife perform umrah or hajj with a personal loan?
The worship is valid, but it is not encouraged; hajj and umrah are only obligatory on those who are able, and borrowing for a recommended act of worship can burden the family.
Allah makes hajj obligatory on those able to make the journey (Al ʿImran 3:97), and the Prophet ﷺ often sought refuge from debt (Sahih al-Bukhari 2397). Umrah is a strongly recommended sunnah according to many scholars, so there is no need to borrow for it. If the loan carries riba interest, it is more problematic still. If someone has assets or certain income to repay, some scholars allow Shariah-compliant borrowing, but beware of "umrah now, pay later" packages and unlicensed agencies. It is better to save gradually, for example through Tabung Haji or a dedicated savings account. See Family finances.
