🕌 Worship in the home · #50
A husband died after his wife had been given her hajj place. May she go on hajj during her ʿiddah?
According to the Shafi'i school, a woman in her ʿiddah after her husband's death must stay at home and may not leave for hajj or umrah until the ʿiddah of four months and ten days ends, even if her turn has come.
Allah sets a widow's ʿiddah at four months and ten days (al-Baqarah 2:234), and the Shariah forbids a woman in ʿiddah to leave her home except for a need (at-Talaq 65:1). Scholars consider that hajj can be postponed since its time extends over a lifetime, while the ʿiddah is fixed in time. Contact Lembaga Tabung Haji as soon as possible to defer her turn on account of her husband's death. If she was already in ihram when he died, the details differ; consult the hajj guide. Going out for needs such as work or treatment is allowed with conditions. See the question on a widow working during ʿiddah.
