My spouse went back to the addiction after stopping for a while. Were our efforts wasted?

Relapse is a normal part of recovery, not proof that all the effort has failed. Many people recover after falling and getting up several times, so do not give up over an attempt that went off track. Help your spouse return to treatment as soon as possible without humiliating scolding. Try to understand what triggered the relapse so it can be avoided. At the same time, keep holding your boundaries and the family's financial safety. Allah teaches: “Seek help through patience and prayer” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:153). Recovery demands long patience. See counselling.
