What are the early signs that a spouse or child may be caught up in addiction?

Sudden changes in habits, money and friendships are often early signs worth paying attention to. Watch for missing money or belongings, secrecy about the phone, a change of friends, irregular sleeping and eating, and emotions that flare easily. These signs do not confirm addiction, but they are a good reason to talk lovingly, not with accusations. Approach with open questions and listening, not searching and punishment. The earlier it is detected, the easier it is to help. If you are unsure, refer to a counsellor to assess the situation. See counselling.
