Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #208

I know restraining anger is good, but how do I do it in a heated moment at home?

Restraining anger is not bottling it up, but choosing not to release it in a destructive form. Allah praises the God-conscious, those “who restrain their anger and pardon people” (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:134). In a heated moment, stop and be quiet for a while; do not reply straight away. Change your posture, sit down if you are standing, and take wudu if you can. Once it passes, raise the issue calmly, beginning with ‘I feel’, not ‘it's always like this’. Restraining anger at the critical moment saves the home from words that cannot be taken back. See communication & emotions.
