How do we choose a counsellor who understands and respects our religious values?

Choose a counsellor who is qualified and who will not advise anything that goes against your religion. You have the right to ask before starting whether they are used to working with Muslim couples and respect principles such as preserving the marriage and the rights of both spouses. A good counsellor guides you to find your own solutions, rather than imposing their values. For specific questions of religious rulings, refer instead to a religious officer or the mufti, because that is outside a counsellor's field. If in the first sessions you feel your values are not respected, you are free to find someone else. This fit matters for you to be able to open up. See counselling.
