Is it better for us to see a private counsellor or go to counselling at the religious affairs office?
Both can help; the choice depends on your needs, cost and comfort. Counselling at the state religious affairs office through the family counselling unit is usually free or inexpensive, and its counsellors understand the Shariah framework and can guide you towards sulh (mediation) if needed. A private counsellor may offer more flexible hours and particular expertise, but charges fees. Whichever you choose, make sure the counsellor is qualified and respects your religious values. You can start with the one that is easier to reach, and switch if it does not suit you. What matters is taking the first step. See counselling.
