I am afraid the counsellor will tell us to divorce. Is that really a counsellor's role?

A family counsellor's role is to help you understand and improve your relationship, not to hand down a decision to divorce for you. A good counsellor does not force any decision; they help both of you see the situation clearly and make your own choice. The aim of most marriage counselling is to repair, not to separate. If the relationship has already put you in danger, safety becomes the priority: call the police on 999 if you are in danger, and Talian Kasih 15999 for support. If you feel a counsellor is too quick to suggest separation without any effort, you are free to get another view. State your hope of repairing the relationship at the start of the session. See counselling.
