Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #180

My spouse's life goals and mine are drifting in different directions. How can we align them without one of us giving in completely?

Different goals are not necessarily in conflict; often they can be arranged so that both are given room. Sit down together and list what matters most to each of you, then look for the common ground you share. Allah praises affairs that are “decided by mutual consultation among them” (Surah asy-Syura 42:38), so make big decisions through discussion. Distinguish between dreams that can wait and those that are urgent, then take fair turns. Avoid forcing your spouse to give up their dream entirely, because buried resentment will surface later. Agreed shared goals are stronger than solitary dreams. Review this plan every year. See household review.
