🕌 Worship in the home · #63
Why are voluntary prayers encouraged at home?
Because the Prophet ﷺ said that the best prayer of a person is in his home, except the obligatory prayers, and praying at home brings the atmosphere of worship to the family.
Zayd ibn Thabit r.a. narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: O people, pray in your homes, for the best prayer of a person is in his home except the obligatory prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 731). Ibn ʿUmar r.a. also narrated that he said: perform some of your prayers in your houses and do not make them graves (Sahih al-Bukhari 432). Children who see their parents praying voluntary prayers, reading the Quran and remembering Allah at home learn without being told. Simple practices: the regular sunnah prayers after Maghrib and ʿIsha at home, the Duha prayer at weekends, and a short night prayer. Obligatory prayers in congregation at the mosque still carry their own merit for men. See Prayer guide.
