🕌 Worship in the home · #36
Is the Friday prayer obligatory for a wife? If she attends, must she also pray Zuhr?
The Friday prayer is not obligatory for women; if a woman attends, her Friday prayer is valid and replaces Zuhr.
The obligation of Friday prayer in the Quran is addressed to those called when the adhan is given (al-Jumuʿah 62:9), and scholars agree it is not obligatory on women, children, the sick and travellers. A woman may attend the mosque observing its etiquette, and the Prophet ﷺ forbade preventing women from going to the mosque (Sahih al-Bukhari 900). A woman who does not attend prays Zuhr at home as usual. A husband going to Friday prayer may take his wife if the mosque has a women's section, especially when travelling. A wife working in an office may also pray Zuhr in the prayer room without going to the mosque. See Congregational prayer.
