🕌 Worship in the home · #64
May a wife lead her daughters or other women in prayer at home?
Yes. According to the Shafi'i school, a woman may lead a congregation of women, standing in the middle of the row rather than in front like a male imam; a woman may not lead adult men.
The Prophet ﷺ allowed Umm Waraqa r.a. to lead the people of her household in prayer (Sunan Abu Dawud 591). Congregational prayer between a mother and her daughters, or between co-wives when the husband is away, earns the reward of congregation. A woman leading recites aloud in the audible prayers if no unrelated men can hear. It is a good way for a mother to teach her daughters the recitation and movements of prayer directly. A son who has not reached puberty may also pray behind his mother. See Congregational prayer.
