Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #319

My in-law loves to backbite and carry tales, so the family often fights. What should I do?

Do not become a channel for divisive stories; break the chain with yourself. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The talebearer will not enter Paradise” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6056), so do not join in or spread what they bring. When they start backbiting, change the subject politely or stay silent, and give no encouraging response. Do not believe stories about other people wholesale before they are confirmed. If their stirring affects your marriage, discuss it with your spouse so you are united and not easily stirred up. Pray for good for them, and keep up the relationship without opening the door to slander. See in-laws.
