Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #342

My parents are getting old and often grumble or repeat stories. How do I stay patient without losing my manners?

Patience with the ways of elderly parents is among the deeds with the highest reward. Do not answer with a sigh or a harsh tone, not even a single word; choose noble words. When they repeat a story, listen as though it were the first time; that honours them. Remember that they repeated the same things to you when you were small without tiring. If you feel your patience slipping, take a breath and remember all they did for you. Pray: “My Lord! bestow on them thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood” (Surah al-Isra' 17:24). See maintenance of parents.
