Q&A › Polygyny: the law

🏛️ Polygyny: the law · #75

My prospective second wife is well off and willing to support herself. Can that count as my ability?

No; maintenance (nafkah) remains the husband's obligation, and the prospective wife's willingness does not replace your own ability. Her good intention deserves appreciation, but circumstances can change: she may stop working, become pregnant or fall ill. At that point, it is you who must support her. Allah says: “Let the one who has means spend according to his means” (Surah at-Talaq 65:7). In the application, state your income and commitments honestly, and do not build your plans on someone else's money. If you can only afford polygyny because the prospective wife is wealthy, calmly rethink your readiness with someone you trust. See maintenance guide.
