🏛️ Polygyny: the law · #74

Must I already have a home ready for the prospective second wife before applying for polygyny permission?

The home need not already be bought, but you must have a clear, affordable housing plan. Proper housing is part of maintenance (nafkah), and the court usually wants to know where each wife will live. A plan that relies on ‘we'll figure it out later’, or staying with the prospective wife's family with no time limit, shows preparation that is not yet mature. Include rent or instalments, utilities and basic furniture in your monthly budget. Make sure your existing wife's home is not affected to fund the new one. If the figures are too tight, it is better to postpone than to start two homes that both go short. See a separate home for each wife.
