Q&A › Polygyny: the law

🏛️ Polygyny: the law · #104

My prospective second wife is a convert. What should I pay attention to in the application and marriage process?

Make sure her conversion is properly registered, and settle the question of the wali with the religious affairs office from the start. A non-Muslim father cannot be the marriage guardian of his Muslim daughter, so the religious affairs office will explain the arrangement for a wali hakim (state-appointed guardian). Prepare her conversion card or certificate and updated identity documents. She may also need to attend a pre-marriage course like other brides-to-be. Beyond the procedure, think about support for her: she may lose the support of her birth family and need ongoing religious guidance. Do not make this marriage the only pillar of her Islam.
