🏛️ Polygyny: the law · #107
My husband has asked me to tell the judge that I fully agree, when in my heart I am not willing. What should I say?
Tell the truth politely; you are not obliged to pretend before the judge. Obedience to a husband is limited to what is good. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Obedience is only in what is right” (Sahih al-Bukhari 7257). Lying to the court is not part of that. The truth need not be harsh. You can say, ‘I am not blocking it, but I am not yet willing and I am worried about the children's maintenance.’ That is honest and balanced. Tell your husband in advance that you will speak the truth, so there are no surprises. If you keep being pressed, tell a syarie lawyer or a counselling officer. See guide for the existing wife.
