Q&A › Khitbah & engagement

💍 Khitbah & engagement · #59

I want to get engaged to a non-Muslim who has promised to embrace Islam. What should be considered?

The marriage is only valid after they have genuinely embraced Islam; make sure the conversion is sincere and understood, not merely a condition for marriage, and allow time to learn.
Allah forbids marrying men or women who associate partners with Him until they believe (al-Baqarah 2:221). In Malaysia, a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim, and conversion must be registered with the state religious authority. Things to consider: do they understand the basics of belief, prayer and the Islamic way of life; how will their family react; and how will you support them after marriage? Conversion only for marriage sometimes ends in major conflict, including over child custody if the couple separates. Bring them to classes for converts and connect them with a religious outreach officer. See Interfaith matters.
