Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #83

How do we discuss the responsibility of caring for both sets of parents before marriage?

Discuss early how the two of you will honour both sets of parents, so it becomes teamwork, not a source of jealousy. Honouring parents is a great obligation, and a husband is responsible for supporting his own parents according to his means. Discuss the possibility of supporting them, caring for them when ill, or living together one day, and how this will be handled fairly. Avoid a situation where one family is neglected while the other is overburdened. If questions arise about the rulings on maintenance (nafkah) or taking turns to care for them, refer to the religious office. Early understanding preserves the ties of kinship (silaturahim) on both sides. See in-laws.
