Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #119

I have never made my own budget. How do I start learning to manage money before marriage?

Start now by recording every expense for a month, because you cannot manage what you cannot see. After a month, divide the records into needs, wants and debts. Then set one simple rule: as soon as your salary comes in, set aside savings and commitments first, and only then spend. Open a separate account for savings so it is not easily touched. Try living as if you already support a family, by moving your estimated rent and grocery spending into savings each month. This exercise gives a real picture of whether your salary is enough. If you need free guidance, AKPK also runs financial education programmes. See family finances.
