Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #153

I grew up with a very harsh father. How do I make sure I do not repeat the same pattern in my own home?

Family patterns can be broken, and your awareness now is the most important beginning. We tend to repeat what we are used to seeing, especially when tired or stressed. First identify the specific behaviours you do not want to repeat, for example raising your voice, punishing with silence, or never praising. Then choose replacements and practise them in your current relationships, such as with siblings or colleagues. Tell your future spouse about this and ask them to point it out when they see the signs. If old memories are still painful, sessions with a counsellor can help you process them. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, gentleness is not found in anything except that it adorns it” (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Birr wa as-Silah wa al-Adab). See family psychology.
