Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #149

I am a man who has never done housework because my mother handled everything. How do I prepare?

Start now at your parents' home, because these skills follow the sunnah and are a provision for life, not just helping your wife. The Prophet ﷺ was described as “always in the service of (helping) his family” (Sahih al-Bukhari 676). Choose three basic skills and master them before the akad: washing and hanging out clothes, cooking a few simple dishes, and tidying the kitchen after meals. Ask your mother or sister to teach you, and accept their corrections with a smile. After marriage, do not wait to be asked; notice what needs doing and do it. A husband who is quick to help is more easily respected, and his wife does not feel she carries the household alone. See husbands' course.
