Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #107

I am a convert (mualaf). How do I involve my non-Muslim parents in my akad?

Invite them with full respect and explain what will happen, because they are still your parents. Many non-Muslim parents feel awkward because they do not understand the akad ceremony. Tell them early about the ijab and qabul (offer and acceptance), the role of the wali and suitable clothing at the mosque. Arrange for a Muslim friend to sit with them and explain each step. Give them a place of honour and a chance to be in the photos. If you are a woman, a wali hakim (judge-appointed guardian) will marry you off, but your father can still attend and be honoured. Islam still requires you to keep your ties with them: “reverence Allah, through Whom ye demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (that bore you)” (Surah an-Nisa' 4:1). See the wali for converts.
