Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #367

My child sulks and asks for expensive things because their friends have them. How do I handle it?

Saying no with love and a clear reason teaches a child contentment better than giving in to every want or scolding them. Listen to their feelings first so they feel understood, then calmly explain the difference between needs and wants. Avoid buying just to stop the sulking, because that teaches them that sulking works. Invite them to save towards part of the cost if the item is reasonable; the effort makes them value it more. Explain that every family is different and comparing yourself with others does not bring peace. Praise them when they accept it graciously. See educating the family.
