🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #125
We are engaged and want to open a joint account to save for the wedding. Is that wise?
It is safer for each of you to save in your own account until after the akad, with transparent shared records. Before the marriage, you do not yet have a bond that defines each person's rights over jointly held money. If the engagement is broken off, money in a joint account easily becomes a source of dispute between the two families. Instead, set a joint savings target, then each save in your own account and share the balance regularly. Also record any money given to the other party, and state whether it is a gift or a loan. On matters of debt, the Quran advises, “reduce them to writing” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:282). Only after the akad, discuss whether a joint account suits you. See family finances.
